I remember in 2003 when I was on the Protein Power Plan diet (yeah, I’ve tried them all), I read Drs. Michael & Mary Eades’ book Power Protein, published in 1996 on their revolutionary low carb diet plan. A lot of my friends thought I had lost my mind to be on such an unhealthy diet. At the time the prevailing thought was a low-fat diet was the “healthy” way to lose weight. Unfortunately, about a year or so later I fell off the “Protein Power Plan” diet wagon not because it wasn’t working, but because life got in the way plus I wasn’t committed to the lifestyle. From that point to when I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2008, I gained over 60 pounds!
“Scientists from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have found that people who eat a diet full of high glycemic index foods—think processed white bread, bagels, white rice, baguettes—had a 49% higher risk of developing lung cancer, even if they’ve never smoked a single cigarette” states Laura Lorenzetti with Fortune magazine.
As I recall, the Eades’ general belief was diets high in carbs were the source of many ailments, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and certain types of cancers. They also ascertain although there weren’t many commercially available low carb food offerings at the time (1996), as more scientists, health enthusiasts started doing their own research and coming to similar conclusions, we will begin to see more readily available low carb offerings.
Ironically, the main reason I’ve been able to successfully manage my diabetes is through a low carb lifestyle and exercise, so the Eades’ did get the carb-diabetes connection right. I may as well check off their obesity-carb connection as being correct too because I lost 45+ pounds. In all honesty, I never would have imagine there was a connection between carbs and cancer. Gastric cancer? Maybe, but definitely not lung cancer. Surprisingly, scientists have proved a carb-cancer connection so the Eades’ get another check for being correct. Just as the Eades’ predicted, you can now buy low carb protein bars, beer, and Friday’s, just like other restaurants, has a low carb menu including a low carb cheese cake. Another check for the Eades’.
Maybe this low-carb stuff isn’t a fad after all. IJS.
