I started watching The Big Bang Theory a few months ago, although several of my co-worker had been telling me for years how good the show was. One night a few months ago, I watched it to pass the time while waiting to watch Scandal. Needless to say, I’ve been hooked ever since! Last night I found myself laughing out loud several times while watching two episodes of TBBT. Since I’ve been enjoying TBBT for the past couple of months, I feel the need to re-introduce myself to make it official, “Hi, I’m David Henderson. I’m a nerd.”
Actually, my kids have been insinuating for years I was a nerd, but I would brush them off and give them that parental “stare”. In hindsight, I should have realized my nerdiness years ago. For instance, one of my favorite comic books is Archie, one of my favorite TV programs is Lost In Space, I was voted the Most Studious male in my high school senior class, one of my favorite all time movies is Revenge of the Nerds and I work in IT. All the signs were there, I was in denial.
A fellow co-worker shared a ZDNet article written by David Gewirtz, How to speak geek and influence nerds. Wait..what?? Actually it’s an interesting satirical article on how you shouldn’t categorize a group of people into one bucket just because of their profession. In the article, Gewirtz highlights 7 points on how to speak to geeks and nerds (click here to read the entire article).
His first point was, “You may not call us geeks or nerds. We can give ourselves that label if we want, but for you to do could be considered a pejorative, and is rude.” So, just because I’ve accepted my geekiness, doesn’t mean you have the green light to call me one. Got it?
Fourth, “Do not underestimate us. The richest man in the world (Bill Gates) is a geek. So is the richest child (Zuck) [Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook].” That’s good company to be in!
His fifth point, “Geeks are more attractive than you think. And we do get the girls.” This explains how I was able to married such a beautiful person. By the way, she was co-captain of the cheerleader squad!!
There you have it, I’m a geek!!!
Actually, because of my “nerdadom” I’ve been able to successfully manage my diabetes for the past 6 years! Like a nerd, I consume tons of information to become a self-appointed expert on the topic. Nerds don’t do anything without a written plan, so I developed a plan and consistently repeat the approach daily just like a nerd would with repetitive experiments. And of course, I use the latest technology and gadgets to track and monitor my progress. So embrace your inner “nerdishness” to manage your health!
So yes, I’m a nerd, just don’t call me one!! Oh yeah, inbox me if you know where I can get a pocket protector from, they’re hard to come by these days.
