NOTE: This is a post I wrote this summer but I forgot to post it. As my friend would say, blame it on my “some-timers!”
I mentioned in an earlier post for 2012 I fell off the wagon because I was working away from home in Atlanta. I have to do a better job of managing this thing when not at home. Anyway, now that I’m back I’ve noticed a few things that’s different from what happened in 2008 when I first got control over my diabetes. First, in 2008 I consistently kept my glucose readings between 85-90, now my glucose is around 98-102. Secondly, although I can comfortably fit into clothes I wore when I was at my lowest weight, I’m actually about 12 lbs over that. Strange, right? Yeah, yeah, I know, muscle weighs more. Well that’s what my team says when I tell them this story. Actually in 2008 I was lifting weights and riding a stationary bike, so theoretically I probably had more muscle mass then versus now since I’m only riding a bike.
I came across a couple of articles on two separate studies that may explain this phenomenon I’m experiencing, higher glucose readings and little to no weight lost. One article suggests Splenda could affect insulin response, and the other suggests Splenda may boost weight gain. For the most part I’m only doing two things different than before, my exercise regime, mainly biking (cardio) but in 2008 I lift weights and cardio; and I use Splenda now instead of Equal. Since my work schedule is so tight I really don’t have time to work in a couple of visits per week to the gym. So I will start with switching sweeteners. Been reading a lot about stevia (Truvia) so I’m going give that a try at least until the end of the year. If things still appear to be stagnant, I’ll figure out way to get some resistance training back into my exercise regime.
Again this is an article I wrote about 6 months ago. My switch to Truvia only lasted for about 2 months. Since it’s a new year, I’ll try Truvia again until the end of 2014. Yeah, yeah, I know, you thought I was trying to eat Clean and artificial sweeteners are not part of a Clean lifestyle and you are absolutely correct. However, I said I was eating “Clean-like!” One day I may be able to get off sweeteners all together, but in the mean time I’m switching from Splenda to Truvia.
