A new year, so it’s time to put things back into their proper perspective, right? I went a little off course towards the end of 2013, i.e. church, health, exercise, blogging, etc. Maybe my workday that begins at 4:00am and ends around 7:15pm including a 5 hour round trip commute had something to do with it. Hmmm, just a thought.
I didn’t go so far off course that I undid all the hard work I put in over the past few years, but I went far enough that I started recognizing the signs that I was headed in the wrong direction, i.e. some of my clothes began to feel a little snug; my daily morning glucose levels, albeit still in the normal range for a diabetic, begin to be consistently higher than what they had been previously, 109-115gl vs. 88-95gl; ironically both my pastor and a friend that’s a pastor called me within hours of each other to see how I was doing; and I received an email inquiring if I had lost my foot because “it’s been a minute” since my last blog post.
Well, I’m back in the saddle!
This time of year in the northeast the weather drastically hinders my cycling activities. Normally I ride 3-4 times a week, but with shorter days and lower temperatures this time of year I’m lucky if I can get a ride in once a week. I don’t bike at night although quite a few people in the cycling clubs I belong to do and I normally don’t bike on Sunday. So for me to get a ride in boils down to one day, one day only, Saturday. And everything, i.e. weather, honey-do list, chores, other commitments, etc., has to align in order for me to ride on this day. Over the past several weekends, I’ve been able to get 3 rides in, a 12, 32, & 26 miler. So at least I’m riding when I can. Exercise? Check.
On the health side of things, my favorite daughter has been eating “clean” for about a year now. Clean Eating magazine describes clean eating as follows: “The soul of clean eating is consuming food in its most natural state, or as close to it as possible. It is not a diet; it’s a lifestyle approach to food and its preparation leading to an improved life – one meal at a time.” So for the New Year she’s pulling me along with her to eat “clean” which in turn means I will be pulling you along as readers of my blog. I doubt I will be able to eat totally clean, so my lifestyle change will be “clean-like.” Health? Check.
So what better way to resuscitate my blog than with a confession (see paragraphs above) and my passion for technology? My better half is enrolled in a PhD program at Drexel University. She had a course last semester on technology and asked me what I thought the next big thing in technology was. I responded with “wearable technology.” I’m talking way beyond Google Glass and the smartwatch that Apple fumbled on and has basically been a flop for Samsung. I mean true game changing, life changing for that matter, wearable technology. For instance, just in case you missed it Google announced their company’s Google X unit is developing a contact lens that measures glucose in tears using a wireless chip and miniaturized glucose sensor. Google says their prototype can measure glucose levels once every second. A contact lens that can measure your glucose level once every second? Now that’s a game changer! Heck, even a life changer! Talking about a GIANT step forward in diabetes management! Read the entire article Google developing smart contact lens. Blogging? Check.
Hebrews 10:25 – Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. I’ll see you at church! Check.
