The grand finale! Drum roll please! My all time favorite Christmas album is Kirk Franklin and The Family, Christmas! This joint right here takes you where a few Christmas albums can only come close to delivering. If this doesn’t make you feel like you’re back in church singing praises to His holy name for giving us His only begotten son, you just may have forgotten what’s the true reason for the season!
Kirk is known for blending R&B, hip-hop, and jazz together to create some of the most rousing gospel songs ever made. Fortunately, he took the same approach to create some of the most spirit-filled Christmas songs ever produced. I previously said the Temptations 80’s version of “Silent Night” was my favorite, and it is. However, Kirk’s version is “da Bomb”!! Then you have Cora from Meet the Browns, oops I meant Tamela Mann, bringing the house down with “Now Behold The Lamb.” To make sure you don’t get it twisted, Kirk penned a contemporary, upbeat, actually funky, original “Jesus Is The Reason For The Season” leaving you with no doubt why we celebrate this time of year. Honestly, every song on this album is AWESOME!!! If you read the reviews of my other 4 favorites I did not made this claim. This is the only album that I can truthfully say, every song on here is a keeper…no filler!
Another reason why Kirk’s Christmas is so special, you can pop this CD in the player in the dead heat of summer, it will still arouse, move, and uplift your spirit. Don’t believe me? Try it this summer. In the words of Kirk, “Santa Claus ain’t got nothing on this!”
There you have it, my five favorite Christmas albums, Kirk Franklin and The Family’s Christmas, Motown’s A Motown Christmas, Luther Vandross’ This Is Christmas, Eric Darken’s Drummer Boy’s Christmas and Destiny’s Child’s 8 Days of Christmas. Hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Don’t forget when you’re at the office Christmas party or a family gathering, encourage and support any diabetic you know to stick with the plan.
