“You should get rid of the old bikes in the garage first before purchasing a new one.” Wifey
My glucose level has been riding on the high normal side for the past couple of weeks, so I really need to get back in exercise mode. I hit a small bump in the road on my quest to cycle more because I was given a direct “suggestion” to rid the garage of our old unused bikes before getting a new one.
We’ve always had 4 bikes in the garage for the occasional family bike outing, unfortunately over the years as the kids grew older those family bike outings have become rare. For the most part, the bicycles in the garage are collecting dust so selling them is a pretty good idea. Actually, since I have sticker shock on how much a “real” bike costs I could use the money from the sale of the old bikes towards the purchase of the new one, win-win for everyone.
After I pulled the bikes out of the garage, washed them off, spruced them up and took pictures of them, I realized only one of the bikes were ride-able. Each bike had an issue, bent rim, lose handle bar stem, and broken chain. The one bike that was ride-able was my old bike which my son uses sporadically. I decided to list the 3 broken bikes on craigslist as-is and keep the “working” bike for my son and I to use until I got a new one. Within 2 days, I had a buyer for two of the three bikes.
Even though I didn’t sell all 3 like I planned I still made a few dollars to put towards the new bike, right? Wrong! The two broken, unused, dust collecting bikes that I sold were “technically” my son & wife’s. Both of them wanted the cash from the sale of “their” bike. This stipulation was never mentioned during the time when it was “suggested” I sale the bikes to make room in the garage; nor when I listed the bikes on craigslist. I told my son when he pays rent, buys groceries and catch a utility bill I would think about it. My wife, well, I kept telling myself, “pick your battles, pick your battles,” so I forked over the dough. Dang.
I still haven’t sold the third bike. I’ve only rode about 20 miles on the bike my son and I share because both rims are slightly bent. Although the bike I’m eyeing to buy is much less than the first bike I thought I wanted until I saw the price, $1300, I’m still flabbergasted at the price of these things. Hmmm I just had an idea, since I was hoodwinked on the craigslist sale, I should get the $1300 bike anyway and blame it on the sug-sug-Sugar!
